Newdigate v Brockham Green 1st Xl on Sat 01 Sep 2007 at 1pm
Brockham Green Won by 9 wickets
With four teams still in with a chance of clinching the Surrey Downs League Title, Brockham Green went into their final fixture against local rivals Newdigate knowing that even a convincing win might not be enough to catch the league leaders.
A brisk start from Newdigate saw them reach 98-2, this in spite of some solid fielding from the visitors, especially a stunning catch from Terry Dunn at second slip, which gave Billy Scott-Malden his first of four wickets.
What followed was typical of the Brockham fielding performances this season. With Scott-Malden (4-60), Gerard Weide (1-25) & Chris Weill (4-25) bowling with pace & control, the wickets started to tumble, & a brilliant run out from Dunn set the home side well & truly on the back foot. Weill & Scott- Malden mopped up the Newdigate tail, the innings being finished with a sharp diving catch from Paul Clark at extra cover. Newdigate dismissed for 121 in 32 overs.
The Brockham reply started steadily with openers Darren Jordan (75) & Mike Duncan (35) riding their luck early on, but eventually developing a solid opening stand which was finally broken with the scores level, Jordan firing the ball straight to cover point. It was somehow fitting that, playing his last game before retirement, Terry Dunn should be left to hit the winning run. Brockham victorious by 9 wickets.
With the Brockham Captain, Mike Tapper glued to his mobile phone, it soon transpired that with both Westcott & West End Esher losing their final games, Brockham had been crowned as league champions for the first time in their 132 year history.
